Harvard Housing Study

Harvard published a report this week stating the echo boomers are 5 million larger than their boomer parents. The report indicates echos will support the housing market in the US for many years to come. This seems contrary to Mr. Dent's analysis who is also from Harvard. I'm hoping for clarification from HSDent Foundation.

The Harvard study show no numbers, but common sense indicates that the Echo Boomers will be wanting homes, but the question is can they afford them.

I was born in 51 and my kids are around 30, but still do not own homes and can still not afford them. My daughter has 100K in the bank but she is still waiting because the 1500 sq foot home she wants is still $550,000 and dropping.

Expect home prices to continue to fall at least thru 2102, caused by more unemployment and more foreclosures.

Hey guys, it is the Dent view that the Echo Boomers will indeed be the ones to lift us out of this housing crisis. We expect a fair amount of strength in the starter home market in the coming years and new Echo Boomers mop up the excess supply. But, unfortunately, we do see the "McMansion" market remaining very weak. There are simply not enough Gen Xers to buy the Boomer's supply of large McMansions.

A 1500 sq foot home costing $550,000 is insane. In Canada we did not have the explosion of homes as in the USA. Here you can get a very nice 1500 sq foot home outside of Toronto for under $300,000. I live in town 40 min outside of Downtown Toronto and this house would cost $210,000 thousand. US home prices are still way too high. Just my thoughts.
